JOURNALISTS will be protected from harsh penalties, including jail sentences, when they reveal confidential government secrets under sweeping legal reforms.
In a move likely to usher in a new era of press freedom, the Rudd Government will toughen shield laws to protect journalists having to reveal their "deep throat" sources.
